Repair & Restoration

Route 66 power supply refresh baseline

Structured starter workflow for inspecting and refreshing aged power supply components in Route-era amplifiers.

Focus Area

Power Supply

Skill Level

Intermediate

Bench Time

3-5 hours

Tools Required

  • Bench power supply with current limiting
  • True RMS multimeter
  • ESR meter
  • Temperature-controlled soldering station
  • Magnification and board inspection lighting

Safety Notes

  • Disconnect from vehicle and external power before opening chassis.
  • Discharge large filter capacitors before board handling.
  • Power up through current limiting after major component replacement.

Service Workflow

  1. Step 1

    Initial visual and smell inspection

Document leakage, bulging cans, board scorching, and any prior rework quality before removing parts.

  2. Step 2

    Record baseline rail behavior

Capture startup current draw and rail voltages. This baseline helps isolate any regression after parts swap.

  3. Step 3

Replace reservoir capacitors in matched groups

Swap one bank at a time and verify polarity twice. Keep lead dress clean to reduce vibration stress.

  4. Step 4

    Controlled re-energize and thermal observation

Bring unit up slowly on current limit, monitor idle current, then confirm heat spread remains symmetrical.

  5. Step 5

    Finalize documentation

Capture installed part IDs, lot/date codes, and after-service measurements for future traceability.
